Beit Simcha: Dancing

Dance is a beautiful way for men, women and children to express the joy of the Lord, thanksgiving, and worship.

At Beit Simcha we dance together to "present our bodies as living sacrifices as a spiritual act of worship" (Romans 12:1). Dance has always been a way in which our people have expressed their devotion to God, as Miriam did at the crossing of the Red Sea, as David did in bringing the Ark of the Covenant to Jerusalem, and as traditional Jews do to celebrate the presence of Hashem at weddings.

The Psalms show that corporate dance was part of liturgical Temple praise and worship. Psalms 150:4 urges God''s people to "praise him with tambourine and dancing, praise him with the strings and flute." So we feel free to dance during our services offering our sacrifices of praise as priests before the Lord. Messianic Jewish dance is based on circle dances of ancient and modern Israel. It does not involve couples embracing each other romantically, but rather everyone is lifting up their feet and hands to God.

Some of our dances are easy to learn; we also offer dance beginner and intermediate dance workshops on Shabbat afternoons.
We also offer dance at workshops to other congregations and churches, and minister in dance at various venues and outreach events.
